Genetic characteristics of sugar and fruit types by reciprocal crosses of small, sweet muskmelons ´S.R´, ´Sugar´, ´Ase´ and large, less-sweet muskmelon ´Roan´ were investigated. Morphological characteristics of fruits were a little different among parents in placenta width, pericarp thickness, fruit length, fruit diameter, but in the whole, characteristics of F₁ hybrids, large fruit were shown to be incompletely dominant. Placenta width, fruit length and fruit diameter in parents showed negative correlation with sucrose content, whereas in F₁´s positive correlations were observed except for placenta width. High content of soluble solids, total sugar and sucrose appeared to be dominant in sweet × less-sweet crosses except for in ´Sugar´ × ´Roan´ cross. These results suggested that there were possibilities for breeding sweet and large muskmelon strains in warm season.
